Une enquête menée en mai 2000 au Cameroun a montré que 90% des enfants subissent la bastonnade à l’école et à la maison. Les résultats ont été à peu près les mêmes au Maroc et au Togo.
Mais un des résultats les plus paradoxaux de la violence éducative, c’est l’aveuglement qu’elle produit aux traitements subis par les enfants. La plupart des gens qui ont été frappés considèrent ces traitements comme tout à fait normaux. Ils minimisent ou ils ne voient littéralement pas ce que subissent les enfants. De même, pendant des millénaires les grandes religions sont restées indifférentes aux violences que les parents infligeaient aux enfants, quand elles ne s’y sont pas activement associées dans leurs écoles, juives, chrétiennes ou coraniques, ainsi que par certains de leurs préceptes, notamment un bon nombre de proverbes bibliques. D’après les renseignements accessibles sur les pays de tradition bouddhiste, le bouddhisme ne semble pas faire exception à la règle. Et ce qui contribue à cet aveuglement, c’est que les effets de la violence éducative ne sont (heureusement!) pas automatiques. Un enfant battu peut très bien ne pas reproduire sur ses enfants ni dans sa vie sociale les violences qu’il a lui-même subies s’il a eu l’occasion de rencontrer ne serait-ce qu’une seule personne qui lui ait manifesté respect et affection. Il peut alors prendre conscience de ce qu’il a subi, ne pas le reproduire et adopter une attitude de compréhension et de respect à l’égard des enfants. Mais la violence éducative ordinaire admise par tous dans chaque société laisse peu de chances à la “résilience”.
Les effets de la violence éducative sur le niveau de violence générale des jeunes et des adultes ont récemment été reconnus par l’OMS dans un rapport sur la violence et la santé, publié en novembre 2002. Ce rapport montre aussi que les châtiments corporels rendent leurs victimes vulnérables à un grand nombre de maladies physiques et mentales, probablement en déréglant le système immunitaire. Sans compter la propension à la toxicomanie, à l’alcoolisme, au suicide et à la violence conjugale, autres résultats de la violence éducative.
Pourtant, si l’on souhaite voir les adolescents et les adultes se comporter d’une manière moins violente il est essentiel de prendre conscience des effets de la violence éducative et de faire son possible pour lutter contre elle. Il y a peu de chances en effet que l’humanité évolue dans le sens de la non-violence si les principaux modèles des enfants, leurs parents, continuent à injecter la violence dans leur cerveau, leur système nerveux et leur psychisme dès le plus jeune âge.
Pour réduire la violence éducative, on peut agir sur plusieurs plans.
Sur le plan individuel, les parents peuvent, bien sûr, décider de ne pas transmettre à leurs enfants l’héritage de la violence éducative et adopter des méthodes d’éducation non-violentes. Témoin de violences infligées par un parent à un enfant, on peut aussi tenter d’intervenir à condition toutefois de ne pas craindre de se faire rabrouer. Une intervention discrète et adroite qui tienne compte de l’état du parent en question peut quelquefois provoquer un début de prise de conscience aussi bien chez le parent que chez l’enfant.
En tant qu’habitant d’une commune, on peut contribuer à créer un lieu de réflexion sur la parentalité où les parents puissent discuter des difficultés qu’ils rencontrent, avec l’aide de psychologues ou de personnes formées à la communication non-violente.
